Bragging Rights!
We are giddy with pride. David Wiley,
a pioneer in the space of open educational resources (and our
COO--where the second O stands for Openness) was named one of Fast Company's Top 100 Creative People in Business. Read the article, tap into his blog, or follow him on twitter (and follow us, following him, on Twitter).
And how about this? Outsell recognized Flat World Knowledge as one of 30 Innovators to Watch in 2009. Read the article; our name is listed right next to that other little start up...Google. Sweet!
Beyond Business and Economics!
You're the first to know: we've expanded our publishing program beyond Business and Economics.
We'll continue to publish books in those areas, but we are officially
branching out! We are thrilled to boast these new members of
the Flat World Author Family, their affiliations, and the courses where
they are writing:
Steven Barkan, University of Maine-Orono, Intro to Sociology Michael Shin, UCLA, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Kim Richmond, Richmond Communications & St. Joseph's University, Selling Mark Winey & Ken Krauter, University of Colorado-Boulder, Genetics
Beyond $0 Textbooks!
Sure our books are $0 online, but now users can also customize their book for their own courses and purposes.
Using
our online tools, users can move a chapter or section to a
new location and delete material they don't cover. The adapted book will
render dynamically with a new table-of-contents, linear pagination, and
a matching index. It is instantly available online at no cost to
students, or in print for less than $30.
Try it out. Chose a published book from our catalog, click "Customize," and make it your own. Or Watch a tutorial video on how to customize our books.
That's not all. Sentence level editing, annotation and more are coming soon. Stay tuned.
Above & Beyond: Flat World Authors
Etti Baranoff, Patrick Lee Brockett & Yehude Kahane are well known (OK, they're superstars!) in Risk Management and Insurance.
Pat is President of The American Risk and Insurance Association. Yehude is one of the most prolific researchers in insurance, and Etti is a frequently sought out expert in insurance and risk. And the 150% she expects from her students is only matched by the 150% she gives back to them and the discipline. They are model Flat World Knowledge authors.
Check out their newly published text, Risk Management for Enterprises and Individuals. Watch a video from VCU where Etti speaks about the current economic climate, learn about Etti in this profile from the ARIA Newsletter, or read this op-ed as she outlines the issue of "Risk" in the curriculum.
Beyond Books!
